Road Transport
Wakefield Transport offers a new fleet with an average line haul truck life of 2 years, including 19 trucks and 3 full time subcontract drivers over 45 trailers including Flat tops, Drop decks, Skels, Tautliners and Vans. Also 2 sideloader and 11 tankers. We have a range of 9 Forklifts with lifting capacity from 1.5 tonnes to 45 tonnes.
With all this in place at its Intermodal terminal Wakefields can send for export 33 refrigerated and unlimited numbers of dry containers on one train.
In the road transport department our software "Transport Loading" is fed all current information about the load and customer requirements, along with pickup and delivery advice. From this database Wakefields can track all cargo, and which vehicle(s) are carting it. We can answer any questions on cargo make up, arrival and departure times, driver and truck information and truck contact details.
Last Year Wakefields were awarded: National Country Carrier of the Year (Australian Freight Industry Awards), North West Region Small Business of the Year (Telstra small business awards) Business Excellence Award for Service Industry (Mildura Chamber of Commerce)

Intermodal

Bulk Wine
Wakefields run a fleet of new food grade tankers designed specifically for the cartage of wine products. We service all major wine companies to destinations throughout Australia. Our tankers are all compartmented to satisfy the most unusual volume sizes. This large range of compartment sizes was put in place to cater for large and small wine movements for bottling. All tankers are insulated to maintain product temperature. All tankers are fitted with collapsible handrails to ensure maximum safety for winery staff. The fleet consists of three single tankers and four B/Double units with a combined capacity of 254,662 litres.

Storage & Cold Chain
Wakefield Transport and Ironhorse Intermodal offers its customers dry and temperature controlled warehousing options. With dry storage of 16,000 square metres and temperature controlled storage of 3,000 square metres. This means we can store or consolidate products and produce for domestic as well as export shipments. Our warehousing team is trained in all facets of dry and coolroom storage requirements. All warehousing has security in place and monitored 24 hrs a day by an external security company.
A Wakefields solution adds value to your business through order picking and global deliveries, and working with alliance companies who are specialists in their fields to achieve seamless service.
The cold chain service is a Wakefields success story. For temperature sensitive produce we pickup direct from farm coolstores in refrigerated vans and sustain the required temperature for the journey to our coolrooms. (In some cases this can be up to 240 kilometres away). Upon arrival at our terminal we unload the cargo into the coolrooms where the produce temperature is maintained.
Once the customer order is confirmed we then pick the order from stock available or the inward load and load the produce through a temperature controlled loading tunnel which seals the produce off from the outside elements. Once loading is complete the doors are sealed and the container placed directly onto the rail wagon. All container settings are checked and the container is powered up for the 614 Kilometre journey to the Melbourne waterfront. While on the rail journey two generators running alternately to share the load maintain the power. All wagons are wired directly to these units with outlets along the wagons providing power to the refrigerated containers. The two generators whilst working together to share the load have the capability to perform this task singularly in case of one generator failing.
Once in Dynon, Melbourne, the containers are picked from the wagons and placed on shore power where they are checked by an outside contractor twice daily to ensure equipment integrity and temperature stability. With our electronic links to the stevedoring companies we are able to book appropriate timeslots for container deliveries to ensure minimum time off power. Once in the terminal they are again placed on power before loading onto the ship.
Another option is to provide a pre-cooled container at the grower's coolroom and load directly into the container. Once loaded we transport it directly our intermodal terminal and place on the wagon and power up. (This is achievable only when short journeys are required) Domestic deliveries can be loaded via the temperature controlled loading tunnel into vans for a similar result.
The service is 5 days a week. Wakefields also stow containers, arrange export documentation, AQIS inspections and can arrange shipping if required. A similar system is in place for imports.

Tanker Wash
The tanker wash facility at our Merbein depot in the heart of the biggest wine growing area in Australia is the only privately owned tanker wash in the area. The system was designed to cater for large volume use, and features food grade sanitation and full automation to meet stringent environmental guidelines. Any chemicals used have been verified by the wineries. This modern automated tanker wash ensures no contamination of customer product. We feel this commitment to customer service sets us aside from our competitors. We also have affiliated washing stations in the Barossa and when away from such facilities our professional drivers can perform the cleaning function with the aid of winery facilities.

Tracking
Whilst in warehousing Customers can choose to use our remote access dial in order and stock reporting system. This allows access 24 hrs a day 7 days a week to the stock you have in our coolrooms. Customers can perform stock reports and order placement from home or via laptop in the Hong Kong market. The system is run by using barcoding technology to identify where a pallet is, what it consists of and when it arrived/departed.
Orders are made up from existing stock on hand and no stock that has departed can be chosen for another order, You can add text to your order with instructions, and save your order to file or print it out for reference. Wakefields can then print all pending orders and allocate a team member to pick the order and stow the container ready for shipment.
All container movements are electronically documented in our own container system. All containers in transit are loaded to our terminal via EDI links through RAMS FMS and when dispatched from our premises the container details are loaded to Melbourne in the same fashion.
